CUTTING THE CORD {Unplugging my tv service}

So... I am definitely considering "cutting the cord" and getting off mainstream TV! Which for me means to cancel my Dish Network Subscription. Why? Well there are definitely several reasons why I am considering this option.

  1. To save money! {who doesn't like saving money?}
  2. I'm behind on some bills and this will definitely help with me getting back on track!
  3. I'm just tired of paying so much money into something that I barely use. Yes, I do watch TV but mostly DVR and Zoie usually wants to watch Netflix anyways! There are a lot of shows on there that she enjoys!
I am definitely still trying to weigh the pros and cons to all of this... Figured I would share with you and if I do go through with cutting the cord, I will definitely update my progress and how it is going JUST in case if you are on the fence with this like I am. I know cutting the cord can definitely be successful in saving money but it can also be a downfall for certain people... It all varies on the type of programming you like to watch. I was reading over some posts I had found that someone wrote about their experience {found here} but he was not successful and went back to his TV service a lil over a month later or so. So let's start with some cons...

CONS
  1. There would be no TV watching in the living room, cause I still have an old TV in there that wouldn't be able to connect to the internet
  2. Zoie would watch tv all the time in my room
  3. Zoie would watch tv all the time in my room {oh wait, did I say that already?}
PROS
  1. SAVE MONEY!!!
  2. SAVE MONEY!!!
  3. SAVE MONEY!!!
  4. Wouldn't be wasting money on tv channels that I do not watch
  5. The living room tv, we could still watch DVD's on it!
  6. We barely watch TV in the living room anyways!
  7. Zoie is already in my room watching tv all the time and when she isn't, it's bed time and she can only watch DVDs in her room as it is right now.
  8. Oh wait! I could hook my ps3 up in my living room if I HAD to, to stream Netflix or whatever! Hmmmm....
So I am pretty sure I have smashed all my cons with my pros. PLUS, I just checked with Dish also, I don't have a contract with them atm, LUCKY ME! But how much savings would I be getting per month? And is that really worth it?

What I pay now:
  • Dish Network 120 Channels+ HBO = $72.99/month
  • Netflix = $9.99/month BUT they are having a price increase starting in Sept so my price will go up to $15.98/month so I'll just use the newer price.
  • TOTAL: $88.97 {DAMN!}
What I COULD be paying:
  • Netflix DVDs + Instant Streaming= $15.98/month
  • Hulu Plus {for TV shows and such} = $7.99/month
  • TOTAL: $23.97/month : SAVINGS of $65.00/month!
How can I not want to switch and save $65.00/month??? Of course, Netflix and Hulu may not offer ALL the stuff I want but there are other ways of getting around that... Like to Vudu {to rent dvds online}, the oh so poplular Redbox, and I might invest in an apple tv or google tv product. Although I plan on do a lot more research on apple tv and google tv before taking that plunge but it is definitely an option down the road!

I am going to sleep on my choices and discuss it with a few close friends... And see what they think. I'll let you know tomorrowish. haha
